 根據水門事件揭發人Carl Bernstein和Bob Woodward所寫自傳改編的電影。二人是《華盛頓郵報》的記者，在水門事件里，他們歷盡艱辛揭開政治黑幕，人物和事件一同成為美國一段家喻戶曉的歷史。故事由五名盜賊開始，他們潛入水門大度行竊。本來是一樁不甚重大的刑事案件，卻在Bernstein（達斯汀·霍夫曼Dustin Hoffman 飾）和Woodward（羅伯特·雷德福Robert Redford  飾）的追查下，最終撕開了一條大裂縫，矛頭直指總統尼克松。從1972年到1974年，從尼克松競選總統到尼克松連任上臺，華盛頓郵報受到的壓力越來越大，甚至被威脅。主編本·布萊德利站在了新聞自由和相信自己記者的這邊，Bernstein和Woodward得以繼續追尋事件真相，得到了重要線人“深喉”的幫助，經歷了難以想象的曲折艱辛后，水門事件最終導致尼克松總統下臺。

　　暑假來臨，大學新生劉易斯·托馬斯（保羅·沃克爾 Paul Walker 飾）決定穿州過省，前往新澤西去看望他自高中時代便喜歡的女孩維娜·威爾柯斯（Leelee Sobieski 飾）。為了打發旅途上的無聊時光，他將正因酒后駕車蹲局子的老哥富勒（史蒂夫·贊恩 Steve Zahn 飾）保釋出來，兄弟倆一路通行。　　旅途中，富勒買了一部車載對講機，與其他的司機扯皮聊天。期間他們搭上一個綽號“銹釘”的卡車司機，富勒突發奇想，慫恿弟弟假扮女人用對講機勾引銹釘。對他們來說，這似乎是旅途中一個無傷大雅、轉眼就忘的玩笑。沒想到他們卻惹上了這個難纏和恐怖的家伙。在接下來的時間里，銹釘成為劉易斯、富勒和維娜難以擺脫的噩夢……
